Peru to boost rice, corn & camu camu production in Loreto region

Peru’s National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA) and authorities in the jungle region of Loreto aim to increase rice, corn and camu camu production by encouraging local technology development.

To that end, INIA and the regional government of Loreto have signed an agreement to boost domestic production of food crops, mainly rice, corn and camu camu.

The agreement, signed by INIA’s head Juan Risi Carbone and Loreto governor Yván Vásquez Valera, includes an investment of 1.5 billion soles (US$500,000).

Camu-camu is a low-growing shrub found throughout the Amazon rainforest, mainly in swampy or flooded areas.

It grows to a height of about 2-3 m and has large, feathery leaves. It produces round, light orange-colored fruits about the size of lemons, which contain a significant amount of vitamin C. Its high vitamin C content has created a demand for camu-camu fruit in the natural products market. (Andina)
